What comes first, fun or functionality? There are a lot of moving pieces to account for when designing a video game and it's easy to focus only on getting things working before they're actually fun. This session looks at how we approached, and continue to approach, designing 'LawBreakers' with some key concepts that helped us ensure that we were making a fun game and not just making a game that functioned.

Session attendees will be able to walk away with design considerations that should allow them to evaluate their own designs and make more innovative choices based on mistakes we've made, past experiences we've worked through and conclusions we've come to while developing LawBreakers.

    Intended Audience

Aspiring and current video game industry designers will benefit from this session. Understanding the nature of class-based competitive multiplayer games, as a gamer and/or designer, is the only necessary prerequisite. Having played LawBreakers would help make connections more quickly, but isn't required.
