    'The Witcher' series of open-world role playing games have beautifully captured the spirit of Andrzej Sapkowski's fantasy novels and immerse you in the journey of Geralt, the Witcher of Rivia. For 'The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt', Matthew was asked to design and develop a deep role-playing experience that would expand the existing narrative-based adventure to provide players with gameplay that spans The Witcher's vast an open world. Focusing on mechanics like the economy, loot and character progression, the challenge was how to create an immersive, rewarding experience when not engaging in the primary quest line.

    Takeaway

    This talk will identify the fundamental mechanics that define the game's role-playing experience. It will consider the state of the game at it's release, design goals for the expansions and feedback from the social media sphere. It will also share the lessons learned and how this feedback has changed the game's design.
